The All Wales Stroke Meeting
The All Wales Stroke Meeting (the acronym has attracted many compliments but was entirely fortuitous) was set up in November 2009 to help physicians across Wales regularly discuss clinical cases. With so many committees, scores, scales and guidelines mushrooming all around us we felt the need to touch base with the important things like the patient narrative, the medical and neurological signs, and the results of investigations.. The ghost-in-the-machine pseudoarithmetic of numbers-where-there-should-be-symbols scores like ABCD2, NIHSS or ROSIER is acknowledged and then banished in favour of anatomy, pathology and pathophysiology, the W3 of stroke medicine (Where?, What?, Why?)
We use existing videoconference facilities to link up every week. With the generous support of the Cancer Services Directorate in the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff a suitable venue was found which accommodates up to 40 people. At the same time locations were found in postgraduate departments in hospitals throughout Wales. During the last year we have had many cases presentations, lectures, and study days with up to nine centres at a time taking part. We can accommodate up to 24 centres. We have been joined by Gloucester and Plymouth, St Goerge’s and Edinburgh as well as centres in Wales.
If anyone would like to join us we “meet” at 3.15pm every Wednesday. For those in Wales the number is 500059; for those dialling in from outside Wales on an ISDN line the number is 029 2024 1957. The landline number in the videoconference room we use in Cardiff is 029 20748772. Specific technical questions should be directed to out technical support team Chris.Barber@wales.nhs.uk
