Quilting group's kind donation to cancer centre

Tuesday, 3 July 2012
A local ladies’ quilting group have put their needles together and raised almost £3,000 for cancer services at Singleton Hospital.

The group, from Pontarddulais, held a raffle and an exhibition of their work which raised £2,900 for the Golau Cancer Foundation.

The members have asked for the donation to go to the Chemotherapy Day Unit and Radiotherapy Department as a thank you for care staff gave to one of their members.

Iris Thomas from Pontarddulais said:

“We wanted to do something special to show our appreciation to the staff for the wonderful care and support they gave to our friend. During her treatment, she found making the quilts therapeutic and she felt it kept her going. She was able to help make part of the quilt which we gave as a first prize in the raffle.

“We are so pleased that our efforts will be used to support local patients and their families.”

Pamela Silvey, Chemotherapy Day Unit Manager, added:

“Thank you very much to the ladies for the work they have put into raising money for us and the Radiotherapy Department. We really do appreciate their hard work. The money will be used to buy the little extras we need for the departments to make the patients more comfortable and improve their experience.”

Corrine Jones, Fundraising Manager for the Golau Cancer Foundation, said:

“We are really pleased that the ladies wanted to support Golau. It was lovely that they were able to do something which helped them come together and remember their friend.”

The Golau Cancer Foundation raises money and awareness for the South West Wales Cancer Centre at Singleton Hospital. Patients from Bridgend to Aberystwyth are treated at the Swansea centre, as well as on wards across the region.
