ABMU’s Cardiac Team recently hosted an international conference which presented developments in the diagnosis and treatment of a leaking heart valve.
Over 50 Consultant Cardiologists, Cardiac Physiologists and Cardiac Trainees, from across the UK, met an international team to discuss advanced methods to diagnose and treat the problem.
It was an opportunity to learn from each other new techniques which could provide more treatment options for their patients.
Dr Adrian Ionescu, Consultant Cardiologist for ABMU (pictured), explained:
“A leaky mitral heart valve is very common in a lot of cardiac conditions and its diagnosis and treatment is constantly evolving. The study day enabled colleagues to come together to discuss recent developments in this field.
“Those attending had the benefit of meeting with an international team. It included Professor Patrizio Lancellotti from Belgium, who is president elect of the European Association for Echocardiography. Dr Navroz Masani, former president of the British Society of Echocardiography, and Professor Ulrich Von Oppell, an expert on mitral valve repair, also took part.
“Professor Lancelotti also demonstrated the use of echo - a form of ultrasound scanning - during exercise for patients with mitral valve leakage. It gave the audience a practical guidance which they very much appreciated.”
The event, hosted by ABMU’s Cardiac Team, was organised by the Wales Echo Forum. Following its success, ABMU’s Cardiac Team has been invited by the European Association of Echocardiography to host more teaching days.
