Measles Outbreak: Data

The measles outbreak centred on the Swansea area was declared over on 3 July 2013, eight months after it began. The data on this page will no longer be updated.

In October 2013, the report of the agencies that responded to the outbreak was published and can be downloaded from the link

Notifications of measles in Wales

The data given on this page are of notifications of measles reported to Public Health Wales by doctors who have diagnosed a patient with having measles from clinical symptoms. Usually, a notification of measles is laboratory confirmed (or not) by sending a sample for virological testing. However, due to the high numbers of notifications reported during an outbreak, it is possible that not all clinically-diagnosed cases will undergo subsequent laboratory testing. It is probable that not all cases notified on the basis of clinical symptoms will be due to measles infection and this maybe true especially for notifications from outside the outbreak area.

Numbers of MMR vaccines given at non-routine ages

Non-routine MMR vaccination means any MMR vaccine administered to individuals at ages other than the ages at which the MMR vaccination is routinely given. The first dose of the MMR vaccine given to one year olds (at approximately 13 months) and the second dose given to three year olds (at approximately 3 years 4 months).

Data in the table below are for:

  • MMR vaccinations given at non-routine ages in General Practice. In order to estimate the numbers of vaccinations given that are ‘non-routine’, totals are provided for patients of all ages, excluding one year olds (for MMR dose 1) and three year olds (for MMR dose 2). A proportion of MMR doses given at non-routine ages will have been given to patients younger than the ages at which routine MMR doses are scheduled.
  • MMR vaccinations given in Health Board drop-in clinics held during the outbreak. Not all Health Boards ran drop-in clinics during the outbreak.
  • MMR vaccinations given in school catch-up sessions provided by all Health Boards in Wales.
  • MMR vaccinations given to NHS Wales staff via Health Board Occupational Health Departments.

Data quality is reliant on accurate submission from a number of sources. It is possible, although unlikely, that there may be a degree of overlap between GP Audit + data and School session figures, and GP Audit+ data and drop-in clinic figures. Therefore, figures presented on this page should be considered indicative estimated based on information currently available.

MMR vaccine effectiveness

Data on confirmed measles cases and their immunisation history continues to be actively collected during the outbreak. The validity of the data will not be finally confirmed and published until after the outbreak is over, therefore the following statement is a preliminary and may be revised.

Data to 26 April 2013 from the outbreak showed very few confirmed cases have caught measles after having had the MMR vaccine.  The vast majority of confirmed measles cases are individuals who have never been vaccinated with MMR.

Less than 10 laboratory confirmed cases are reported to have previously received any MMR vaccination.

This emerging data suggests that in the outbreak area one dose of MMR vaccine protects against measles in more than 95 out of every 100 vaccinated, and two doses protects in around 99 out of every 100 vaccinated.

This is in line with or better than levels of effectiveness expected from other published data.

Numbers of children un-vaccinated or under-vaccinated with MMR vaccine within each Health Board in Wales

The reports below give details of the numbers of children in Wales un-vaccinated with the MMR vaccine or having received only one dose of MMR as at 01 November 2012. Data are presented by Health Board, by Local Authority and by age band.

Additionally, uptake data for all routine childhood immunisations in Wales are published quarterly by Public Health Wales. The latest report covering the time period October-December 2012 and all previous reports from 2003 onwards are available from the link uptake data for childhood immunisations in Wales 2003 - 2012external link 2013
