GP Out of Hours Service and Out of Hours Pharmacy Information

GP Out of Hours Service - 0845 6001231

This is Gwent’s third main urgent service in the community. It is very busy, particularly at weekends, getting around 95,000 calls a year in total. This service aims to provide medical advice and treatment for urgent problems (when the patient or carer feels that their health problems cannot safely wait until they can contact their own GP or practice nurse).

On calling Gwent OOH the patient’s details will be recorded and a doctor or nurse will call the patient back and assess how best to help. This may be by advice over the phone or by a face to face assessment at a Primary Care Centre (in Newport, Ystrad Mynach or Abergavenny).

Those few patients who are terminally or seriously unwell will be seen at home. Home visits are also done when travel would cause deterioration in someone’s medical condition. However, this also means that the doctor or nurse is spending a lot of time travelling instead of dealing directly with sick people (many of whom are children). Please bear this in mind if you are asked to come to a base or are have a medical consultation over the phone.

Out of Hours Pharmacies

If you need details of a pharmacy that is open out of hours (ie after 5:30pm Monday to Saturday and on Sundays/Bank Holidays), go to the NHS Direct website, scroll down to 'Filter by', select 'Out of Hours Service' and enter your town or postcode in the search box provided.  This will provide you with a list of your local pharmacies and their opening times.

Please remember to Choose Well - viewing this information will help you to decide if you should self care or whether you may need to use one of our health care services.
