About St Woolos Hospital

St Woolos is a Community and Mental Health Hospital for the people of Newport and surrounding areas.

The Casnewydd Unit consists of 8 wards.
Penhow Rehabilitation for Neurology and Thoracic Patients
Ruperra Stroke rehabilitation
Tredegar Psychiatric unit
Gwanwyn Orthopaedic rehabilitation
Dermatology This ward includes day case and outpatients
   
Holly Mental Health
Hawthorn Mental Health
Sycamore Mental Health


The mental health wards provide acute assessment and treatment for older adults who have functional and organic mental health problems.

They are supported by Psychiatrists, Psychologists, Community Mental Health Nurses, Occupational Therapists and Social Workers, whilst having access to departments and services within St Woolos Hospital.

The Springfield Day Hospital is also located in the Casnewydd Unit. This helps patients improve their day to day life style and includes home assessments to enable them to continue to lead a normal daily life.

The Unit also houses Morgan Therapy which combines the services of:
  • Physiotherapists
  • Occupational Therapists
  • Speech and Language Therapists
  • Dieticians


The hospital, along with the Royal Gwent is serviced by the Operational Services Department.

Location:

St. Woolos Hospital is situated on the western edge of Newport City Centre at the top of Stow Hill and opposite St. Woolos Cathedral

Getting there:

By car:

From the M4 travelling West:
  1. Take exit 25A, turning left at the roundabout, going into Newport City centre.
  2. Continue on this road ignoring the left exit, to the next roundabout near the bus station.
  3. Bear slightly right at this roundabout to take the third exit, the A48 and continue to a set of traffic lights.
  4. Turn right.
  5. Continue past the Royal Gwent Hospital to the traffic lights and take the right exit up Belle Vue Lane
  6. Take the next left turning and then the next right into the hospital.
From the M4 travelling East:
  1. Take exit 28, and follow signs for the A48 Newport around the roundabout.
  2. Continue on the A48 through the next roundabout and for just under 2 miles.
  3. At the traffic lights turn left up Belle Vue Lane.
  4. Take the next left turning and then the next right into the hospital.
From the North:
  1. The main road from the north is the A4042 from Hereford & Abergavenny.
  2. This road meets the M4 at junction 25A.
  3. Continue straight across the roundabout at this junction
  4. Then continue as from the second point in the instructions for the M4 travelling west.
By Bus.
 
Please note the 98 and 99 services will discontinue as of November 17 2012.

Newport Transport and the Aneurin Bevan Health Board are continuing their support of bus services to St Woolos Hospital and the Royal Gwent Hospital. 
 
Patients and visitors travelling to St Woolos Hospital will be able to catch the service 5, which will stop inside the hospital grounds once an hour, while services 1 and 2a and 2c also stop in the hospital area.
 
14 buses every hour can be used to get to the Royal Gwent Hospital with service numbers 30 through to 38 stopping outside the main entrance on Cardiff Road.

Facilities:

  • The Staff and Visitors Restaurant is situated across the covered walkway on level 2 from the Casnewydd unit and is open from 7:00am to 1:45pm, Mon - Fri, serving full English and Continental breakfasts.  Weekends from 7:00am - 11:30am.  Vending: frozen food vender, with available micorwaves; a chilled snacks machine - crisps, sandwiches, chocolates & sweets; a can machine - coke, lilt, orange; two hot drinks machines.
  • An afternoon Trolley service to the wards provides the local evening newspaper and sundries, morning papers also available.
  • The hospital chaplains (Anglican/Free Church/RC0 visit wards regularly, arrangements can be made for outside clergy and other religious leaders to visit.
  • An Honesty bookcase is situated outside the General Office which is located in the main entrance of the old building via the covered walkway.

Lunch:   12:30pm - 1:30pm

Where protected mealtimes are in place visitors who wish to support their relative to eat and drink are welcome to do so.
Dermatology Ward
Monday - Friday 3:30pm - 5:00pm and 7:00pm - 8:00pm
Weekends 3:00pm - 5:00pm and 7:00pm - 8:00pm
Holly Ward

3:00pm - 5:00pm, 7:00pm - 8:00pm

Hawthorn Ward 3:30pm - 5:00pm, 6:30pm - 8:30pm
Sycamore Ward
11:00am to 8:00pm - The ward operates a protected meal time policy as follows:
Lunch:   12:30pm - 1:30pm
Tea:       5:30pm - 6:30pm
Where protected mealtimes are in place visitors who wish to support their relative to eat and drink are welcome to do so.
Orthopaedic Surgical Unit 3:00pm - 5:00pm and 7:00pm - 8:00om


At weekends the visiting hours for Holly, Sycamore and Hawthorn Wards are 10:00am to 8:30pm.
Visitors will be asked to leave Holly, Sycamore and Hawthorn Wards at mealtimes, and they are advised to speak to the Nurse in Charge before bringing children into these wards.

Other arrangements can be made in special circumstances.
