About the Redwood Memorial Hospital

Redwood Memorial Hospital has twenty-one General Practitioner beds, two of which are used to provide a respite service. The hospital also has a Minor Injury Department. Clinics held at the hospital include:
  • Urology
  • General Surgery
  • Child Psychology
  • Learning Disabilities


In addition, the Incontinence Advisor and Audiologist provide a service within the hospital.

A number of Community Psychiatric Nurses and the Sure Start Team are also based at the hospital.

Getting there:

By car:

From the South / M4 West / Cardiff
  1. Leave the M4 at junction 32 (Tongwynlais) and travel north on the A470 towards Merthyr
  2. At the roundabout just south of Merthyr, turn right onto the A4060 and continue to the roundabout at the junction with the A465
  3. Turn right onto the A465 and continue for about 2 miles to the roundabout at the junction with the A469 north of Rhymney
  4. Turn right onto the A469 and continue south for just under 2 miles
  5. Just before the police station turn right and continue down the hill towards the railway station
  6. At the bottom of the hill turn right in front of the tennis courts, opposite Rhymney College and Redwood Hospital is a little way along on the right
From the South / M4 East / Newport
  1. Leave the M4 at junction 28 and travel north on the A467 to the roundabout at the junction with the A4048 at Crosskeys
  2. Turn left onto the A4048 and continue to the junction with the A472
  3. Turn left onto the A472 and continue for a mile or so to the junction with the A4049
  4. Turn right onto the A4049 and continue northwards towards Rhymney
  5. In Pontlottyn, at the junction with the A469 turn right under the bridge onto the B4256 and continue again northwards towards Rhymney
  6. Just after the police station in Rhymney turn left and continue down the hill towards the railway station
  7. At the bottom of the hill turn right in front of the tennis courts opposite Rhymney College and the Hospital is a little way along on the right
From the North A465 Hereford / Abergavenny / Neath
  1. Leave the A465 at Rhymney turning onto the A469
  2. Continue south for just under 2 miles
  3. Just after the police station turn right and continue down the hill towards the railway station
  4. At the bottom of the hill turn right in front of the tenn courts, opposite Rhymney College and Redwood Hospital is a little way along on the right


By Bus

Buses numbered 001, 002, 1, 2 and 3 run frequently throughout the day between Merthyr and Bargoed, travelling through Rhymney

By Train

The main railway station in Rhymney is within walking distance of the hospital, and trains run hourly from Cardiff.

There is limited car parking both in and outside the hospital grounds.

  • There is another lounge available for overnight stay of relatives
  • A hairdresser visits weekly
  • There are regular visits by the Hospital Chaplain and local religious leaders
  • A portable telephone is available to patients
  • There are library facilities and vending machines
