About Nevill Hall Hospital
Nevill Hall district general hospital was opened in 1969 and provides inpatient, daycase and outpatient services together with a complete range of investigations. The hospital is a designated major trauma centre with an Accident and Emergency department.
Other services provided on or from the site include:
- Community Child Health Services
- Cardiology
- Oral Surgery
- Ear Nose and Throat
- Ophthalmology (including day case surgery)
- Oncology
- Oral Surgery
- Dermatology
- Plastic Surgery
- Integrated Cross Sectional Imaging (Magnetic Resonance and Computer Tomography scanning
- Psychiatry
- Clinical Genetics
At weekends the facilities of the outpatient department are used by local G.P.s for the holding of their surgeries.
The following individual departments have achieved awards:
- Pathology has attained accreditation by C.P.A. (U.K.)
- C.S.S.D. has achieved B.S.I. accreditation I.S.O. 9002 and I.S.O. 46002
- Glan Usk suite has a ‘Q’ award
There is also a new Post Graduate Medical Centre on site (opened January 2002) which hosts multi-disciplinary training in a range of specialties as well as providing specific teaching for doctors in training. Recent events include:
- a number of all-Wales seminars and symposia
- hosting and invigilation of the examination for G.P. Registrars from all over Wales
- the highly acclaimed 4 monthly M.R.C.P. course
- a series of practical tutorials for G.P.s
- a Presentation Skills course for overseas doctors run jointly with Gwent Tertiary College
The hospital has recently developed a ‘Millennium garden’ which provides both disabled and other visitors to the site with an enjoyable sensory experience.A number of other developments have recently been carried out on the site, including a new coronary care unit, increased clinical facilities in the Outpatients department, a new Medical Records department, and a state-of-the art gamma camera facility.

Nevill Hall is situated on the western outskirts of Abergavenny on Brecon Road on the A40 Brecon road, and is clearly signposted on all incoming road links.

Getting there:
By car:
From the South / M4
From the M4 travelling east
- Take junction 26 the A4051, to Cwmbran
- Continue North up Malpas Road, and take the right turn at the roundabout on the end onto the A4042 to Abergavenny
- Follow signs to Abergavenny
- Just South of Abergavenny (after about 18 miles) is a large roundabout (the Hardwick roundabout) take the first left off this, the A465, the Heads of the Valleys road.
- Take the first left again and turn right at the "T" junction into Abergavenny.
- Continue straight through the next roundabout by Safeways and then straight-ahead at the next, ignoring the right exit into the town centre.
- Continue straight on turning left at the next small roundabout
- The hospital is on the left a few hundred yards along this road
From the M4 travelling west
- Take junction 25A the A4042 to Abergavenny, then continue as from No 3 above
From the North
- The main road into Abergavenny from the north is the A4042 from Hereford
- Follow this road to its junction with the A465 (The Hardwick Roundabout) and then continue as from No 4 above, taking the fourth exit of the extended roundabout onto the A465
From the East
- The main road east into Abergavenny is the A40/A449 linking with the M50 from the Midlands, and Chepstow
- Follow this road until its' junction with the A4042 and A645 at the Hardwick Roundabout and then continue as from no 4 above, taking the second exit onto the A465
From the West
The hospital is situated on the A40 the main Brecon / Abergavenny road on the right as you enter the town
By public transport.
Abergavenny is on the main west coast line from Swansea and Cardiff to Hereford and beyond. The station is about a mile from the hospital, on the other side of the town, and a taxi will be needed.
The number 40 bus runs from the bus station in the town centre to the hospital starting at 7:30am, and then hourly from 8:00am until 6:00pm.
The bus from Abergavenny to Cardiff via Merthyr, also runs hourly from 07:35am to 20:35pm, through the hospital grounds. (Please note, the bus timetable is subject to change).

Car Parking:
Blue Badge parking is available is available adjacent to Accident and Emergency, and in the main hospital car park.
Please do not park in the roadway, or on double yellow lines
- A buffet bar in the main outpatients department is run by the League of Friends and is open 10:00am to 4:00pm
- A shop in the main concourse is run by the WRVS and opens 10:00am to 6:00pm
- Trolley services to the wards providing some books, toiletries, newspapers etc
- The hospital chaplains (Anglican/Free Church/RC0 visit wards regularly, arrangements can be made for outside clergy visits.
- There is a small ward available for private patients
- Beds and some open areas are equipped with Hospedia. This system allows for a private television and phone line for each patient, and runs on cards purchased from vending machines throughout the hospital. Phone cards cost £2:00 for approximately 20 minutes, outgoing calls to landlines are free except to mobile phones,TV cards cost £3:50 for 24 hours, (larger capacity cards are available) but some services eg radio, breakfast tv and services to the children's ward are free.
- Where Patientline is not installed there is a mobile phone for outgoing calls, and usually a lounge with TV.
- The dining room on the first floor is open for hot meals
Breakfast 7:00 am to 11:00 am Lunch 12:00 midday to 2:00 pm Dinner 5:00 pm to 7:30 pm - Vending machines for drinks and snacks are available at all other times, in the coffee lounge situated off the dining room.

Flowers
Unfortunately, fresh flowers can be a source of infection for those patients who are seriously ill, or who have reduced immunity.
Therefore please do not bring fresh flowers for patients, with the exception of the maternity ward.
Artifical and "Silk" flowers are not affected by this policy.
