No Car Parking at the front of Royal Gwent Hospital

Wednesday, 30 November 2011
Work will start on Monday 5 December 2011 at the Royal Gwent Hospital to replace the main water main serving the hospital and will take around 12 weeks to complete.

All front car parks will be closed during this period and fenced off.

The work will take place within 100 metres of the main hospital buildings and will be at the ‘Accident and Emergency end’ of the hospital.

We need designated areas in order to maintain emergency services and ambulance access at all times.

Disabled and drop off only parking will still be available and managed by our security staff as the phases of the project progress around this end of the hospital.

Buses will be directed by security staff to stop where it is safe to do so as the project progresses, passengers should be prepared for them to use the bus stop just outside the hospital on Cardiff Road.

This essential work is being carried out following a series of leaks from the main cast pipe which will be replaced by a 6” plastic pipe.

The main trench will be under the road that circles the main hospital building, and whilst it will be possible to keep the road open, through traffic on an already busy site, will be severely restricted.

Work will start at the rear of the hospital on the perimeter road. Working in stages contractors will move across the front of Accident & Emergency and down towards Cardiff Road. The works will then cross the entire length of the bottom car park closest to the front perimeter wall before finishing opposite the main entrance to Fracture & Orthopaedic and Main Outpatients.

Neil Pearce from Works & Estates said “We apologise for the loss of parking whilst this work is undertaken. We are asking members of the public to help us by avoiding the use of long term car parking and to make alternative arrangements in advance of their hospital visit. Any reduction in traffic throughout the period that this work takes place will help us greatly. There will be some ‘drop off’ parking and disabled spaces available and our security staff will manage traffic flows as the work progresses.”

Alternative parking is available in Mendalgief Road, and on the old Whiteheads site, which is accessible from the top of Mendalgief Road and patients should make alternative arrangements without the need for longer stay parking.

We apologise for any inconvenience this work causes to patients, visitors and staff but it is extremely important that this work is carried out.
