Description of service
Cwm Taf Health Board provides a range of primary, community and inpatient services for adults and older adults across the four localities of Rhondda, Cynon, Taf Ely and Merthyr Tydfil’s areas.
Primary Mental Health Services
In line with the requirements of Part 1 of the Mental Health Measure Cwm Taf Health Board have established a Primary Care Mental Health Support Service as of 1 October 2012. Part 1 places a statutory obligation on Health Boards and Local Authorities to work together to deliver ‘ageless’ Local Primary Care Mental Health Support Services (LPCMHSS). These services must accept referrals from GPs for any patients whether they are registered or not. The services must be provided for patients with mild to moderate mental health problems and under take 5 functions:
- Assessment
- Provision of a range of interventions
- Referral on the other relevant services
- Provision of information and advice to the Primary Care team
- Provision of information and advice to patients and carers
The aim of this service is to offer appropriate and timely therapeutic interventions including guided self help, psycho-educational courses such as Mindfulness and in some cases counselling. Alongside therapeutic interventions other forms of support, information, advice and onward referral will be provided. Consultation, advice and training will be made available to all primary care staff via this service and planned visits to each practice will take place on a regular basis.
Memory clinics are also provided across each of the four localities.
Secondary Community Mental Health Services
Community Services are provided via multi-disciplinary, multi-agency Community Mental Health Teams for adults and older persons services in each of the four localities in partnership with Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council and RCT County Borough Council.
In addition to the locality Community Mental Health Teams (CMHTs), there are:
- 2 x Crisis Resolution & Home Treatment Teams providing 24/7 crisis assessment services and seven day home treatment services
- 2 x Assertive Outreach and Recovery Teams providing seven day support and treatment to those with serious and enduring illness
Community Drug and Alcohol Services are also delivered across the four localities with strong links to social services and the voluntary sector.
In-patient services
There is one adult acute mental health in-patient unit for the whole of Cwm Taf based at the Royal Glamorgan Hospital. The unit comprises:
- A 15 bed admission/assessment unit
- 2 x 14 bed treatment wards (Wards 21 & 22)
- A 6 bed Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU)
The Health Board also provides two dedicated in-patient rehabilitation services which are situated in Treorchy in the Rhondda Valley.
- Pinewood House is a 16 bed Community In-patient rehabilitation service situated on the High Street in Treorchy town centre
- The Supported Recovery Unit is a 15 bed High Dependency service based within Ysbyty George Thomas Hospital in Treorchy.
