What is Audiology?
Audiology is the science of hearing and balance.
The Audiology Department provides a service for patients with hearing and balance impairments.
The Department assesses hearing and identifies damage or disease which may affect the ability to hear quiet sounds or understand speech or may cause dizziness. This is done using many different and complex techniques. Individual management plans are provided which may include provision of hearing aids.

In addition to the adult service there is a dedicated children’s service and the introduction of Newborn Hearing Screening has resulted in hearing screening for all babies born in Wales. If indicated, hearing aids can be fitted to new babies within weeks of birth. This has resulted in a highly specialised area of the service being developed.

The department also performs hearing tests for Ear Nose and Throat clinics at Prince Charles Hospital, Royal Glamorgan Hospital, Llwynypia Hospital and Aberdare Hospital.
Patients who have impaired hearing or balance may be referred to the Audiology Department for treatment. Patients who meet the nationally agreed referral criteria can be referred directly to the department by their General Practitioner for assessment and fitting of hearing aids.
See: “How do I get a hearing aid?”
Since the introduction of digital hearing aid technology hearing aids can be fitted to many people who may not previously have benefited from amplification.
Existing hearing aid users self-refer for review and maintenance. Hearing aid users remain “on the books” for life, and are never discharged from the service.
