ABM University Health Board has a formal  partnership agreement with Swansea University, and works very closely with its College of Medicine, College of Human and Health Sciences and Institute of Life Science. The driving force behind the partnership is innovation, research and development and an over-arching quest for new and better treatments and care for patients. Many of ABM's top clinicians also hold posts or have key roles in the School of Medicine, School of Health Science and ILS.

Developments continue to thrive with ABM being a key player in the University convergence bid for European funding. The successful opening of the Institute of Life Science (ILS1) - a £52 million investment in research infrastructure within the University  -is seen as the blueprint for further investment. With the availability of European support through 2007 – 13 so-called ‘Convergence Funding’, advanced plans are in place for a second ILS construction (ILS2) to promote translational medical science initiatives, building on the basic research based in ILS 1. Matched funding from Industry, amounting to over £23 million, is already in place to support this activity. Click on this link to see a video of the 2009 launch of ILS 2.  and February 2010 - 'topping out' ceremony as building nears completion

Institute of Life Science

June 2007 marked the opening of the doors to the new Institute of Life Science (ILS) and the beginning of great new things for innovative researchers and business developers in south Wales. In just four years, this pioneering concept has been realised, putting Swansea University’s School of Medicine on the map as a world class research hub and highlighting the region’s continued economic growth.

Life science is recognised as one of the most fertile sources of technology transfer in the world, giving the ILS the potential to create significant economic wealth. Opportunities are arising from areas such as research collaboration, intellectual property licensing, spinout companies and inward investment and, in readiness for these, the ILS is well equipped. With state-of-the-art laboratories and a dedicated Business Development Centre, the focus is on building long-term commercial-academic links and making first-class medical progress.

The ILS and Swansea University also provide a unique infrastructure for computational biology, which is centred on the Blue C supercomputer. This is one of the very few supercomputers in the world dedicated to life science research and, thanks to a high profile collaboration with IBM, has a permanent home at Swansea University.

ILS 2 is currently being built in the grounds of Singleton Hospital and is due to open in 2012.
