Chairman: Win Griffiths
Born in South Africa in 1943, Mr Win Griffiths was educated at Brecon Boys’ Grammar School and University College, Cardiff.
Prior to embarking on a full-time political career, Mr Griffiths was a teacher and held posts in Tanzania, Birmingham and Barry before becoming Head of the History Department at Cowbridge Comprehensive School in 1976. He entered politics at a local level, serving as a Councillor for Dinas Powis on the Vale of Glamorgan Borough Council, whose Leisure Services Department he chaired from 1973 to 1976.
He left teaching in 1979 when he was elected as a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) for South Wales. During his 10 year tenure as an MEP, he served as Vice President of the European Parliament (1984 – 1987).
Mr Griffiths was elected as the Member of Parliament for Bridgend in 1987, an office he held until his retirement in May 2005. His many responsibilities during his time as M.P. include serving as a Front Bench Spokesperson for the Environment. (1990 – 92), Education (1992-4) and Wales (1994-97). In 1997, he became Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Wales. His responsibilities included Health and Social Services, Local Government, the Countryside, and People with Disabilities. He also became the first Minister for Children in the U.K.
For 6 years he was a member of the Speaker’s Panel of Chairs in the House of Commons.
Mr Griffiths has also been very active in the voluntary sector and has especially been involved with health related voluntary organisations such as the Royal National Institute for the Blind (RNIB) and the Royal National Institute for the Deaf (RNID), now Action for Hearing Loss. At the beginning of 2006 he became the Chair of the Wales Council for Voluntary Action, having served 6 months as Shadow Chair.
He became the Chair of the former Bro Morgannwg NHS Trust in 2005 and Chair of the former Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University NHS Trust in 2008. While Chair of the Bro Morgannwg NHS Trust he set up a health link with the Ola During Children’s hospital in Freetown, Sierra Leone. Staff from the Health Board volunteer to do training work and the project is financed by fundraising and contributions from the Staff. (This follows his work in Sierra Leone after the Civil War to help re-establish democracy).
After serving as President of the Boys’ Brigade in Wales for 10 years he was made its Honorary President.
He is President of the Kenfig Hill Male Voice Choir and the Porthcawl Choral Society.
His other interests include keeping fit (he is an erstwhile marathon runner), listening to music particularly 50’s and 60’s and classical, gardening and outdoor and, supporting Wales, South Africa and New Zealand, in that order, in rugby.
Since becoming the Chair of ABMU Health Board he has conducted a review of Non Urgent Patient Transport Services for the then Health and Social Services Minister Edwina Hart A.M. and now chairs an Implementation Board to carry out his report’s recommendations. He also sits on the Rural Health Implementation Group and the Learning Disabilities Working Group implementing the recommendations of the “No One Knows” Report (Prison Reform Trust) on the Criminal Justice System and people with Learning Disabilities and Difficulties.
In 2010 he became the Chair of the Welsh NHS Confederation which represents 7 Local Health Boards and 3 National Health Trusts in Wales.
He was appointed a trustee of RNID, now Action on Hearing Loss, in December 2010.
He is Chair of the Remunerations & Terms of Service Committee.
He is Chair of the Empowering Ward Sisters Committee.
He is Joint Chair of the Partnership Board of ABMU Health Board and Swansea University.
He is Champion for the Equality, Diversity and Human Rights Strategic Group.
He represents the Third Sector on the National Social Services Partnership Forum.
Married to Ceri, with 2 children and 4 grandchildren, Mr Griffiths lives in Cefn Cribwr, Bridgend. He has been a Methodist Lay Preacher since 1966 and is the Church Steward of Cefn Cribwr Methodist Church.
Vice Chairman: Ed Roberts Dr Roberts is the former Chair of Bridgend and Neath Port Talbot LHBs. He has been a GP in Port Talbot since 1972 and a former Bro Morgannwg Trust Practitioner since 1980. He has been a Vocational Course Organiser in General Practice and a Continuing Medical Education Tutor.
Michael Williams lives in Swansea. He is Group Chief Executive of Grŵp Gwalia Cyf. He is a Visiting Professor in Housing and Social Care at the University of Glamorgan, and occasionally lecturers in law at Universities and for professional bodies. Professor Williams previously served as a non-executive director on Swansea NHS Trust, and was Acting Chairman during the last months of that organisation. Michael was Vice Chairman of the successor organisation - Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University NHS Trust and is on the Board of the Welsh Council for Voluntary Action and Chairs its Audit Committee.
David Davies lives in Tonna, Neath. He is currently a Trustee Board Member and Chair of the Employment Sub Committee for Neath Port Talbot Council for Voluntary Service, Lay Member for the Mental Health Review Tribunal for Wales, Vice President of Neath Port Talbot Alzheimer's Association, Member of the Rotary Club of Neath and Magistrate of Neath Port Talbot Bench. David previously served as a Non-executive Director on both the Bro Morgannwg (when he also occupied the role of Vice Chairman) and the Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University NHS Trusts.
Barry Goldberg lives near Llandysul, Carmarthenshire. Until the end of 2007, he was Head of Health Informatics and Leader of the Centre for Health Informatics within the School of Health Science at Swansea University. He is an Honorary Research Fellow within the Centre for Health Information, Research and Evaluation (CHIRAL) in the Medical School, Swansea University. Barry was formerly a Non Executive Member of the ABM University NHS Trust.
Paul Newman lives in Swansea and is currently a Consultant and Company Director. He was formerly the Managing Partner of John Collins and Partners (Solicitors). He has been a solicitor for over 20 years. He is Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Welsh Initiative for Supported Employment and Chair of Governors of Cwmrhydyceirw Primary School. Paul is also Clerk to the Pontlliw and Tircoed Community Council.
Charles (Jan) Janczewski lives in Cowbridge and is a Business Consultant. He is a former Non Officer Member of Bridgend Local Health Board and is a retired local banker with a strong background in the Swansea, Neath Port Talbot and Bridgend areas.
Melvyn Nott lives in Bridgend and is the Leader of Bridgend County Borough Council. He is a Board member of South Wales Police Authority and a Board member of Bridgend Local Service Board as well as Chair of the Bridgend County Safety Partnership. Melvyn was formerly Councillor for Mid Glamorgan County Council and a Community Councillor for St Brides Minor Community Council. He is currently Chair of Governors with Bryncethin Primary School and is a Magistrate at Bridgend Law Courts.
Gaynor Richards lives in the Swansea Valley and is the Executive Director of Neath Port Talbot Council for Voluntary Service. She was previously a Member of the Welsh Assembly Government's Social Enterprise Joint Working Group and is Board Member of Tiddlywinks Childcare Centre, Ystalyfera Health and Wellbeing Centre and Ioan Davies Community Group. In 2008 she was awarded the M.B.E. for services to the Voluntary Sector in Wales.
Ceri Phillips is Professor of Health Economics in Swansea Centre for Health Economics and Deputy Head (Research) of the College of Human and Health Sciences at Swansea University. He was appointed to the Bevan Commission by the Welsh Minister of Health and Social Services on the 60th anniversary of the NHS to advise and oversee the new configuration and structure of NHS Wales and has been a member of the Steering Group which has been involved in the design of the Primary and Community Services Strategic Developments that have been taking place in Wales during 2009/10. He has been the health economics member of the All Wales Medicines Strategy Group (AWMSG), which advises the Welsh Minster of Health and Social Services on matters relating to prescribing decisions and medicines management, and is currently the Vice Chair of its New Medicines Group, which appraises all eligible new, licensed medicines, available for use in the NHS, and which makes recommendations to AWMSG.
