Healthy snacks display encourages and informs

Children and parents visiting the Outpatients Department at Morriston Hospital will now be greeted with positive and fun messages about healthy snacks.

The waiting room display, created by Student Dietitian, Jo Gamba, is a health promotion project encouraging the younger generation to opt for healthier snacks whilst also informing parents of the benefits. The project is part of Jo’s training to become a fully qualified Dietitian.

Jo worked with ABM Dietitians from the Department of Nutrition & Dietetics, and took inspiration from the Swansea Healthy Snack Award and Steering Group, who promote use of low sugar snacks and drinks.

Over half of the parents and staff questioned about the display said it had increased their awareness of the variety of healthy snacks available.

Student Dietitian, Jo Gamba said: "I chose to promote healthy snacks as they are an important part a healthy balanced diet for children. I made the display eye catching, child friendly and bilingual to appeal to the families that visit the hospital. I am pleased that feedback has been positive.”

Ceri Ambrose, Community Paediatric Dietitian commented: "Jo worked hard and produced a colourful, informative display which has brightened up the waiting area. This has been well received and we hope to produce a different display for another area of the paediatric outpatients at Morriston."
