From Tuesday 28th August, the main path from the multi-storey car park to the main entrance of Morriston Hospital will be permanently closed.
The closure will enable the redevelopment of the hospital to continue. However, it will mean that the temporary disabled car park and drop off area next to the main entrance will also be closed.
Shan Morgan, Service Development Manager, said:
“We would like to apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused by the necessary changes we need to make as part of the improvements to Morriston Hospital.
“We have put into place alternative paths from the car park into the hospital, which we have signposted to make it easier for people to find their way.”

One alternative route, which provides disabled access, is to the left of the pedestrian crossing from the car park. It takes patients and visitors along the top part of the hospital and has rest shelters along the way. It enters the main hospital corridor just past the information desk.
At this entrance there will also be a drop off area for community cars, ambulance taxis and private transport. There will also be several disabled car parking spaces.
The main entrance will still be open. But, in order to reach it, patients and visitors will need to turn right at the pedestrian crossing from the car park and walk around the bottom of the building site. This will take them to the new road, built as part of the development, which leads straight to the main entrance. However, as it is sloped, it can cause problems for those who have difficulties walking.
Ambulances will continue to use the main entrance as a drop off area and visitors will still be able to access the Artificial Limbs and Appliance Centre.
Shan added:
“Access to the departments at the lower part of the hospital, for example, Outpatients, blood tests and dental, will not change. Patients and visitors still turn right at the pedestrian crossing and walk down the hill. However, there is a disabled car park close to the Outpatients department.
“Also, the main bus stop at the top of the hill will remain, but the rest of the on-site bus route will change in early September. The stop outside Maes y Gwernen Hall will move onto the new road, bringing it closer to the main entrance. There will also be a stop outside the Outpatients Department.”
Regular updates will be provided on the changes being made to the hospital, but if anyone has any specific queries, please contact the Health Vision Swansea Team on 01639 683339 or by emailing HVS@wales.nhs.uk.
