ABM launches Morriston Active Travel Scheme

Thursday, 26 August 2010
A commitment to looking after the health of the environment and encouraging staff to get active saw the launch of the Active Travel Scheme (Morriston) yesterday at Morriston Hospital.
Following on from the success of the Active Travel Scheme at Singleton Hospital this similar scheme aims to encourage more of the Morriston site workforce to cycle or walk to work, leaving their cars at home.

Sustrans, the Transport Charity, has developed an Active Travel Map for staff working at Morriston Hospital. The map highlights to staff living locally how easy it is to get to the Morriston site by cycling, walking etc.

Claire Plowright (pictured), of Sustrans, was on hand yesterday to introduce the new map and hand out a number of free goodies including cycleometers.

One interested member of staff was Consultant Anaesthetist Dr. Huw Maddock, a keen cyclist, who regularly cycles 9 miles across Swansea to work.

On the benefits of cycling to work Dr. Maddock said:
“It’s a great way of exercising without eating into your personal leisure time. You get your exercise traveling to and from work, freeing up more of your leisure time.”

Rhodri Davies, Service Planning Manager added:
“Sustrans have produced a great map that really highlights to people living locally how easy it is to cycle or walk into work. You can also research further, using the Sustrans website, the difficulty levels of your walk/cycle route to work, which enables people to choose the right option. For example, they could walk one day and drive the next – it’s totally up to staff.”

The initial scheme set up at Singleton proved to be very successful, winning a number of environment and transport awards. It is hoped that the Morriston scheme will prove to be just as successful and beneficial.

With the introduction of the Metro Bus that operates across the city, including stops at Morriston Hospital, sustainable transport has never been more accessible.
