A&E Department receives a welcome donation from the far East

Thursday, 26 August 2010
The Japan Seaman’s Medical Affairs Corporation has donated rapid response equipment to Morriston Hospital’s A&E department.
The equipment, to be used within the department, will help save lives and time in emergency situations.

A&E Consultant Mike McCabe said: “The kind donation of funds from the Japan Seamen’s Medical Affairs Corporation has allowed us to buy two important pieces of equipment for the A&E Department.

“The cardiac saw allows emergency cardiac operations to be carried out in the A&E Department and the intra-osseus infusion system allows intravenous fluid to be rapidly administered into long bones.   This is a major advance in trauma which has been used by both military and civilian practitioners over the recent years.

“We are very grateful for Mr. Hugh Thomas in his role as Japanese Consul in accepting the kind donations made by the Japan Seamen’s Medical Affairs Corporation.”

ABM Chairman, Mr Wyn Griffiths added:

“We are delighted that the corporation has kindly donated this life saving equipment to the A&E department.

“ABM has a great long standing relationship with the Corporation and over the years they have donated equipment to various ABM hospitals, which we are very grateful for.”

The Japan Seamen’s Medical Affairs Corporation (JSMAC) has had links with South Wales for many years.

Across the globe the Corporation has identified a number of centres of excellence; hospitals where Japanese seamen can have a high level of care for surgical and medical conditions.

Previously, the local hospital providing this service was Neath General Hospital, as a large number of Japanese ships used the Port Talbot and Baglan Bay facilities.

Over the years the Corporation has kindly provided donations to fund medical equipment at Neath General Hospital and more recently, with the transfer of trauma care, Morriston Hospital.
