Bronglais Hospital’s Endoscopy Unit has become the first in Wales to be awarded JAG Accreditation.
The Endoscopy Unit underwent the final stage of accreditation in January 2012 with a site visit by a JAG assessment team.
The JAG is the Joint Advisory Group on Gastrointestinal endoscopy and represents the four main Royal Colleges (Medicine, Surgery, Radiology and General Practice), the RCN and a variety of other professional associations and societies. JAG Accreditation is achieved through a peer review visit process that assesses all aspects of an endoscopy service, including clinical quality, quality of the patient experience and workforce issues.
The Accreditation visit is carried out by professional colleagues from other units and the process is a supportive one intended to ensure services provide a minimum standard of care for patients. Achieving the rigorous standards of JAG Accreditation is recognised across the UK as a badge of quality.
The JAG’s mission is to provide UK wide support for the whole of the endoscopy workforce to ensure they have the skills, resources and motivation necessary to provide the highest quality, timely, patient-centred care.
The JAG has achieved a stepwise change in the quality assurance of endoscopy services in England in recent years and increased the profile of endoscopy enormously. The JAG has both UK and worldwide recognition of its achievements in improving the quality of patient care.
In Wales Bronglais Hospital is the first Unit to have achieved this status. The report stated:
‘‘The unit should be congratulated on high standards of leadership, teamwork, safety and facilities. There is a highly experienced and obviously caring and committed staff workforce. This is a patient centred service. It has outstanding waiting list management and booking systems which other units could learn from.’’
Dr Mark Narain, who has directed Endoscopy services in Bronglais Hospital since December 2000, said: “This is not an award for a one-off peak in excellence but recognition for sustained effort and site support.
“I am delighted that all the individuals who have continually committed themselves in the service have been given their due recognition for the excellence that has been maintained.
“Although it has been hard work I can now say it has been worth every second of it.”
