Fraud Awareness Month - Roadshows - June 2010

To be held on various dates from 3rd - 24th June 2010
To be held in various hospital locations

NHS Fraud Awareness Month will be taking place in June 2010 across the entire NHS organisation.  The aim is to raise awareness of the problems faced by the NHS caused by individuals defrauding us of valuable resources.

At a time of tightening budgets, it is an area of loss which we can actively protect.

Since the first Fraud Awareness Month in 2003, Local Counter Fraud Specialists (LCFSs) have organised many highly successful events to raise awareness and educate NHS staff and patients.

This year, Hywel Dda Health Board’s LCFSs – Leeanne Davies and Caroline Powell – will hold Counter Fraud Road Shows at the Health Board’s four Acute hospitals, on the following dates:

  • Bronglais General Hospital, Aberystwyth ~ Thursday, 3rd June 2010
  • Prince Philip Hospital, Llanelli ~ Thursday, 10th June 2010
  • West Wales General Hospital, Carmarthen ~ Thursday, 17th June 2010
  • Withybush General Hospital, Haverfordwest ~ Thursday, 24th June 2010

The venue for all four sessions will be the respective dining areas.

The purpose of Fraud Awareness Month is to show everyone who works in and uses the NHS how damaging fraud can be, and the simple things that can be done to prevent it occurring.  By knowing how to recognise and report fraud, and by ensuring that such behaviour is not tolerated, we can all help in the aim to reduce losses which affect patient services.

The effectiveness of the Counter Fraud work being undertaken across the organisation has recovered nearly £4 million in Wales and led to a number of successful prosecutions, against individuals who commit fraud against our public health service.   Whether it is prescription fraud, timesheets or contractor fraud , these are just some of the cases you can learn about.  Fraud directly affects our services and we need the help and support of all who work in and use the NHS.

Through Fraud Awareness Month 2010, we can continue to help prevent NHS fraud, work towards reducing it to the lowest possible level, and recover money for our local services.  Come and meet your LCFSs and hear more about the types of fraud affecting your NHS in Wales.
