One of the advantages of taking a course leading to the NHS professions listed below is that the NHS provides money towards the cost of study. The NHS pays university fees and offers bursaries for UK citizens who satisfy the residency rules. Fees and bursaries do not have to be paid back. Students with dependents may claim for additional means tested allowances and towards child care costs. Students with disabilities may also be entitled to an additional allowance. Please click here for detailed information on the conditions for claiming and contact details for the NHS Wales Student Award Unit. Student loans may also be available, please click here.
Once you have been offered a place at a Higher Education Institution (HEI) the Institution will notify the body assessing your bursary which, in turn, will contact you with the relevant application form. Bursary funded places are limited, therefore students are advised to make early application. Where bursaries are not available from the NHS, applicants should seek the advice of the university as to whether there are any alternative sources of funding.
Means Tested Bursaries
A means tested bursary is awarded after the student's family income has been assessed. It is paid on a sliding scale, so that those whose families have the least income receive the highest rate of bursary and those whose families earn more receive less.
To check your eligibility for a means tested bursary, please read 'the means tested bursary' section in the Financial Help for Healthcare Students in Wales booklet.
For those on orthoptics, prosthetics and orthotics courses, which are not yet offered in Wales , bursaries are available for the courses in the rest of the UK .
Means tested bursary holders are also eligible for a student loan from their Local Education Authority, for further details please click here.
Non-Means Tested Bursaries
To check your eligibility for a non-means tested bursary, please read 'the non-means tested bursary' section in the Financial Help for Healthcare Students in Wales booklet.
Childcare Allowance
