PodiatryThe Podiatry service is available by appointment only at 47 clinics in Gwent as well as in most hospitals. Persons of any age may access the service with a referral from a health professional (e.g. Doctor, Nurse, Physiotherapist etc), and a domiciliary service is available to house-fast patients. The service is able to offer a range of treatments for foot pathologies and disorders to compliment routine podiatric care. These include specialist nail surgery services, biomechanical assessment and orthotic provision, specialist diabetes clinics and wound care. The Podiatry department also provides an emergency response for existing patients who develop problems (eg infections or ulcerations). The aim is to resolve foot problems as efficiently and effectively as possible leading to patient discharge. The promotion of good foot health and the positive encouragement of patients and carers to play a role in their treatment, helps patients retain responsibility for their own care wherever this is appropriate. The focus of treatment is shifting away from long term palliative care towards completed episodes of care. To enable this change the department is continually developing care pathways and packages based on clinically effective and evidence based best practices.
