Chronic Fatigue Syndrome / M.E. ServiceAs well as working with people with chronic pain the pain management service works with people whose primary presenting problem is Chronic Fatigue Syndrome or ME. Whilst often pain forms part of the condition we have found that the overall approach taken at the centre and the techniques used to return to function are highly beneficial to people with CFS/ME. People with the CFS/ME diagnosis are invited to take part in the normal pain management programme. Our research has shown that participants benefit from improved physical functioning, greater tolerance of day to day activities and improved confidence to remain in control of their lives. The focus of the programme is to teach people how to manage their condition for themselves and as a result they continue to improve their wellbeing long after they have completed the programme. The approach is also supported by the latest NICE guidelines for CFS/ME: "Cognitive behavioural therapy and/or graded exercise therapy should be offered to people with mild or moderate CFS/ME and provided to those who choose these approaches, because currently these are the interventions for which there is the clearest research evidence of benefit." (NICE CFS/ME Guidelines, 2007) Referrals are accepted from Consultants or General Practitioners. ( Outcome data from the pilot study can be found below:
