Pain Management Programmes

Most people do not know what to expect when they attend a pain management programme. This page describes what we do and don’t do on the programme. Please contact us if you would like further information or click here for the Guided Tour

WHAT WE DO

Our aim is to help people manage their pain better and to improve their quality of life

We will teach you ways to manage your everyday activities which currently may be restricted by pain.

We will help you to evaluate some of the ways that you have learned to cope with your pain. We will help you to decide what is helpful and what is not, including the things that may be making your pain worse. We will teach you techniques that can make you more comfortable. We will also teach you ways of making episodes of increased pain less distressing.

We will give you helpful advice and lots of explanation so that you can make choices about how to manage your pain. We encourage you take responsibility for your health and enable you to make informed decisions.

We will work mostly in a group setting with opportunities for indivdual sessions as required.

The centre is staffed during the day and the staff go home at about 5pm. Therefore in order to attend, you will need to be able to look after yourself. You have free time in the evenings. Out of hours emergency cover is provided by the nursing staff on one of the wards at the hospital.

Breakfast and lunch are provided. You will be responsible for your own meal in the evening and you will be expected to stay at the centre during the week.

WHAT WE DO NOT DO

We do not offer any treatments such as massage, acupuncture, hydrotherapy etc.

We do not offer a cure for chronic pain.

We do not prescribe or supply any pills or medication so you will need to bring your current drugs with you.

We do not treat you like a ‘sick’ person in hospital.

We do not provide physical care such as help with washing/bathing or dressing.
