Rapid surveillance of influenza in Wales using Audit+

Summary of current influenza activity Trend Last updated
Influenza activity at baseline level Stable

09/02/10

NPHS CDSC would ask General Practitioners not to change their coding practices due to swine influenza but to continue using the existing Read codes as they have done for previous influenza seasons.

We would ask that practitioners use the diagnostic Read code H27z rather than the 16L code when diagnosing influenza like symptoms.

Notes on interpretation:
  1. Rates are calculated daily using data from all practices in Wales participating in the Welsh Assembly Government Data Quality Service Scheme (comprising the practice module Audit+, and the central analysis tool, Audit Web)
  2. Rolling weekly influenza consultation rates are expressed as: number of consultations per 100,000 practice population per week.
  3. The rolling weekly rate is based on consultations recorded using Read codes (see box 1 for list of Read codes used).
  4. Rates are calculated as rolling weekly rates based on the seven day period leading up to and including submission date .
  5. Only practices reporting to Audit+ on the end date will be included in the rate for the preceeding week.
  6. At present, thresholds have not been established for influenza consultation rates using Audit+. Preliminary analysis indicates that reporting levels are generally higher in Audit+ than in the GP Surveillance of Infection in Wales scheme (see Figure 3 for historic influenza trends recorded in the GP Surveillance of Infections in Wales scheme).

The NPHS produce a weekly influenza surveillance report for Wales which contains data from both the GP sentinel surveillance scheme and the Audit+ rapid surveillance scheme. A new report is published every Wednesday afternoon. These reports are available from: http://www.wales.nhs.uk/sites3/page.cfm?orgid=457&pid=34338
