Oncology services in North Wales are managed by the Cancer Clinical Programme Group within Betsi Cadawaldr University Health Board.

Radiotherapy is delivered from the North Wales Cancer Treatment Centre at Glan Clwyd Hospital using 3 linear accelerators and a back up machine. The majority of external beam radiotherapy including IMRT is delivered from this centre.

The North Wales Cancer Treatment Centre also provides inpatient facilities for the provision of Iodine therapy.

Brachytherapy is currently provided at the Clatterbridge Centre for Oncology and Christie Hospital, Manchester.

Chemotherapy is delivered on an out patient basis on all three acute hospital sites using dedicated facilities;

  • Heulwen Ward – North Wales Cancer Treatment Centre
  • Shooting Star Unit – Wrexham Maelor
  • Alaw Day Unit – Ysbyty Gwynedd, Bangor.

Inpatient oncology facilities also exist at the North Wales Cancer Treatment Centre and Alaw Ward in Bangor.

Clinical trials are performed on all three sites under the auspices of the Welsh Cancer Trials Network.

Referrals are made to the Clatterbridge Centre for Oncology and Christie Hospital, Manchester for very rare cancers or very specialist cancer treatment.

Services are delivered by 10 Consultant Oncologists and associated medical staff and a cohort of specialist nursing and therapy radiography staff.
