Sharing information for better continuing care

An information technology project gets the go ahead for Specialist Palliative Care patients and will be rolled out next year.

This will mean that anyone requiring Specialist Palliative Care such as Cancer patients would have a detailed record of their care.

It will reduce duplication of treatment and tests as well as providing clinicians with consistent standards.

The record will be held on the Cancer network information system CANISC (the all Wales service for information in Cancer services) and be accessible to organisations through the NHS Wales intranet – the website for staff.

The organisations involved will include the voluntary hospice sector, the NHS Wales hospices and community hospital support teams.

A dedicated CANISC terminal will also be provided for hospices which do not currently access it.

Palliative Care information and technology is represented on the National Service Management Board for CANISC.
