Wales Cancer Trials Network

Welcome

About Us

The Wales Cancer Trials Network (WCTN) supports cancer clinical researchers in Wales.

WCTN is funded by the Welsh Assembly Government and Cancer Research UK. The network supports prospective trials of cancer treatments and other well-designed studies endorsed by government research councils, academic research groups and cancer charities, with the ultimate effect of delivering benefits to patients more quickly.

The network provides direct support to 18 hospitals across Wales. Support includes funding for research staff and equipment, training, information and co-ordination.

The WCTN works to:
  • make research a more routine and acceptable part of high quality NHS care
  • increase involvement and recruitment into clinical trials across Wales
  • improve equity of access to trials of new treatments
  • meet both the Wales Cancer Standards for research and the research targets in the Designed to Tackle Cancer Implementation Plan

Since the WCTN was established in 1998 its achievements include:
  • significantly increasing the number of patients entering cancer trials. Over 10,500 patients entered trials between 1998 - 2008
  • improving the speed, quality and integration of cancer research
  • better networking and sharing of best practice, information and experience
  • improved training, professional development and performance management of research staff
The WCTN collaborates with NHS cancer care providers across Wales, Clinical Research Collaboration Cymru, Wales Cancer Trials Unit and the National Cancer Research Network (NCRN). The WCTN co-ordinating centre is based in Cardiff and Regional Network Managers support 3 regions in Wales (North, South East and South West).

WCTN is celebrating its 10th Anniversary. For more information on WCTN's achievements over the past ten years download the  10th Anniversary Leaflet or poster
