Renal National Service Framework

Designed to tackle Renal Disease in Wales: A National Service Framework

The Welsh Assembly Government published in April 2007, a National Service Framework and Policy Statement "Designed to Tackle Renal Disease in Wales". Improving the quality of the care of those people with or at risk from renal disease is the cornerstone of that policy statement and National Service Framework (NSF) which defines evidence based standards for the planning, organisation and delivery of care for those with or at risk from renal disease.

The Assembly Government’s aim is to ensure that renal services are planned, organised and delivered around the needs of the children, young people and adults with or at risk of developing renal disease and their families.

The Policy is designed to guide the service, working in partnership, to transform the planning, organisation and delivery of renal services in Wales. The NSF document sets out the strategic direction for renal services and provides a framework to support all activity.

In 2008 the Welsh Assembly Government issued a three year Strategic Framework for the period 2008-11 that set out the key interventions required of the NHS in Wales in implementing NSF standards. The Strategic Framework is available to view online from this website.

The Standards

The National Service Framework is made up of a number of different Standards which, with the exception of Standard 1, are grouped together in a series of Modules. Together, these standards will cover the whole spectrum of care for both children and adults. The Standards are based on the best available evidence, against which the quality and effectiveness of care will be measured.

The Policy Statement, National Service Framework and Guide for Patients and the Public are now available to view online from this website. Alternately hard copies of the documents can be requested from:
