Welcome to the National Collaborating Centre for Cancer

The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) produces guidelines for use in the NHS in England and Wales. Guidelines help health professionals in their work, but do not replace their knowledge and skills.

Originally NICE established seven national collaborating centres to develop its guidelines, following the merging of four there are now four national collaborating centres. Each collaborating centre is a partnership of professional organisations, academic units and patient/carer organisations.

The National Collaborating Centre for Cancer (NCC-C), launched in April 2003, is the most recent of the seven collaborating centres set up by NICE. The NCC-C is responsible for developing NICE guidelines for the NHS in England and Wales on treating and caring for people with cancer.

The NCC-C is hosted by Velindre NHS Trust in Cardiff and operates in partnership with Cardiff University and other organisations, which are represented on the NCC-C Management Board.

The NCC-C is the first collaborating centre to be hosted by an NHS trust and the first to be based in Wales.

The NCC-C develops its guidelines using Guideline Development Groups (GDGs), consisting of doctors, other health professionals and representatives of patient/carer organisations. More details are provided on the Developing Cancer Guidelines page.

The vision of the NCC-C is to establish an efficient and effective way of producing cancer guidelines. The NCC-C has strong links with organisations for health professionals who are involved with the management of cancer patients in England and Wales and with groups for cancer patients and their carers.
