Diabetes NSF
The Diabetes NSF standards were published in England in December 2001 and have been adapted for use in Wales. The Diabetes NSF Standards (Wales)were published on 29 April 2002. The Delivery Strategy was launched in Wales in Spring 2003.
Delivery Strategy
The key elements proposed in the Delivery Strategy are:
- setting up local diabetes networks or similarly robust mechanism, strengthening joint partnerships between Local Health Boards and Local Diabetes Service Advisory Groups
- reviewing the Audit Commission Baseline Service Review reports, establishing and promulgating local implementation arrangements to achieve the standards
- putting in place registers and clinical management systems published with the Delivery Strategy
- All Wales Diabetes Retinopathy Screening Service
- participating in comparative local and national audit
- dedicated education and advice for people with diabetes
- ensuring that staff working with people with diabetes engage in continuous professional development and updating in diabetes education
The Delivery Strategy offers a framework for the NHS to build capacity to:
- put in place building blocks for the NHS to reach the National Service Framework targets over the next ten years.
- deliver the national targets.
An All-Wales Patient Reference Group was also set up in 2003 to discuss any issues arising from policy documents produced by the Welsh Assembly Government. The group consists of patients from all over Wales who also share best practice. From 2007 to 2009, this group will form the patient reference group for Diabetes Retinopathy Screening Services.
The XPERT programme was also launched in 2007 to provide education to all healthcare professionals across Wales to enable them to deliver structured advice to patients with Type 2 diabetes and to issue them with the necessary equipment to deal with Type 2 diabetes. This programme is taking place in 22 areas across Wales and the DESMOND programme is being delivered over 4 areas in Wales.
The Dose Adjustment for Normal Eating (DAFNE) programme is also being delivered in 2 areas in Wales and the remaining 20 areas will deliver Bournemouth programme called the Dose Adjustment for Your Daily Diet (DAFYDD) programme.
