Scenes of Conwy 4

Background

Located in the centre of North Wales, Conwy covers 1,130 square kilometers or 702 square miles extending across a wide variety of landscapes.  In the West and South are the mountains of Snowdonia, which comprises 35% of the county’s land area and some of Wales’ most spectacular countryside but contains only 5% of the population.  The rest of the county is composed of rolling hills and moorland with the northern boundary of the county formed by a 37 mile, narrow coastal plain, which is an amalgam of sandy beaches and rocky headlands which contains over 80% of the county’s population of which 29.9% are Welsh speaking.

The 2001 Census estimated the population of Conwy to be 109,800.  The population has grown by 1.7% between 1991 and 2001 compared to the Wales average of 1.6%.  Conwy residents aged over 65 currently number over 25,000, which is 23% of the total population with approximately 12%, or almost 1 in 8 over the age of 75.  This is the highest proportion in Wales and furthermore, in some wards, the percentage of older people the population is more than double that in Wales as a whole. The summer population increases dramatically due to tourists as 11.6% of all tourist accommodation in Wales is within the County.

Health Services

The population’s health services are provided by a network of primary care contractors, 2 local NHS Trusts and tertiary care providers in England, mainly Liverpool and Manchester.

The local primary care network comprises of:

  • 19 GP practices
  • 21 Dental practices
  • 28 Pharmacies
  • 14 Opticians
The main local hospitals are:
  • Ysbyty Glan Clwyd
  • Ysbyty Gwynedd
  • Llandudno Hospital
  • Abergele Hospital
  • Colwyn Bay Hospital

The Welsh Ambulance Service provides emergency and patient transport services from its stations at:
             Colwyn Bay           Aberconwy             Llandudno               Llanrwst

Currently the LHB employs 42 staff of which 31 are full time; 4 seconded posts and 5 attached local National Public Health Service staff.  There are currently 15 staff members who are Welsh speaking.

Conwy LHB currently retains the “Gold” standard award for Corporate Health at Work, an award issued from the Assembly to organisations who demonstrate their commitment to improving the health of their staff.

The LHB promotes a no-smoking policy throughout the building and its grounds.
