Freedom of Information Act 2000

Welcome to the homepage of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOIA), developed to meet the needs of the general public and their pursuit for relevant information. This website will contain useful resources and links to support your information enquires in terms of the Act.

What is the Freedom of Information Act 2000?

The FOIA 2000 reflects a national policy shift in public administration from a culture of confidentiality to a one of openness.

The Act gives individuals the right of access generally to all types of recorded information held by public authorities regardless of the date of the information, subject to certain limited exemptions. Subject to these exemptions, anyone making a request must be informed whether the public authority holds the information and, if so, be supplied with it - generally within 20 working days.

The Government implemented the Act on the 1st January 2005.
