The aim of the Newport Local Health Board is to improve the health of the people of Newport through the effective commissioning of health services by providing:

A more modern NHS in Newport

Better value for the public money we spend

More money invested in promoting health and wellbeing

Shorter waiting times for operations

Improved quality and access to the health service

Newport Local Health Board is a NHS organisation established in April 2003 by the Welsh Assembly Government.  We are separate from the Gwent Healthcare NHS Trust (that runs the Royal Gwent Hospital)  We plan and commission healthcare based on the needs of the people of Newport, approximately 140,000.

In Newport there are 80 family doctors in 22 practices and 22 dental practices.  There is one major hospital - The Royal Gwent/St Woolos.

The Board is made up of 26 members from a variety of backgrounds (Medical, Lay, Voluntary Sector, and Local Authority).  The board meets in public every other month and the meetings are advertised in local surgeries, at the hospital and in the local paper.  Members of the public are welcome to attend.

Complaints and Suggestions:
Newport LHB has a Complaints Policy and a leaflet is available which tells you what to do if you have a complaint or concern regarding the services provided by and on behalf of the Newport Local Health Board, e.g. GP's, dentists, opticians, pharmacists or about hospital or community services.  Our complaints policy does not deal with complaints about private treatment, local authority social services, or where you have started to take legal action. You should whenever possible try to resolve the issue with the service provider, but if this is not possible you should write to: Ms Jude Kay, Head of Corporate Matters, at the above address. You can also send comments and suggestions via the feedback at the top of the page.

As a public authority, we are required by law to protect the public funds we administer.  We may share information provided to us with other bodies responsible for auditing or administering public funds, in order to prevent and detect fraud. The Auditor General is responsible for carrying out data matching exercises under its powers under the Public Audit (Wales) Act 2004. Data matching involves comparing computer records held by one body against other computer records held by the same or another body to see how far they match.  This is usually personal information.  Computerised data matching allows fraudulent claims and payments to be identified.  Where a match is found it indicates that there is an inconsistency which requires further investigation.  No assumption can be made as to whether there is fraud, error or other explanation until an investigation is carried out.  The Auditor General currently requires us to participate in a data matching exercise to assist in the prevention and detection of fraud.  The Auditor General requires this authority to provide information it holds for this purpose.  We are required to provide particular sets of data to the Auditor General for matching.  Details are set out on the Wales Audit Office website As the use of data by the Auditor General in a data matching exercise is carried out with statutory authority (Part 3A of the Public Audit (Wales) Act 2004), it does not require the consent of the individuals concerned under the Data Protection Act 1998. Data matching by the Auditor General is subject to a Code of Practice.  This helps all bodies involved in data matching to comply with the law and good practice, including maintaining data security.
