News: Global spotlight on Map of Medicine

6 November 2009, Informing Healthcare

A leading New Zealand clinician recently travelled to Wales to see the Map of Medicine in use after hearing about it on the other side of the world.

Dr David Sage, Chief Medical Officer of Auckland District Health Board, said “We had heard about the work in Wales and wanted to come and see it. I have been impressed with developments in both the use of Map of Medicine and other initiatives like the 1000 lives campaign. The visit has been extremely useful and we would be happy to share ideas and knowledge between New Zealand and Wales.”

Dr Sage, was visiting Wales, on behalf of the New Zealand Government, to explore how the Map of Medicine is being used to support pathway development.

As well as visiting Informing Healthcare he also visited Hywel Dda health board and met with members of the clinical effectiveness department who are supporting the implementation of the Map of Medicine.

Dr Sage was shown an example of a localised pathway and a demonstration of how other Map of Medicine pathways have been used to support the modernisation of services (for example breast care).

The new Mental Capacity Act pathway was also showcased which is available on Hywel Dda’s local view of the Map.

He dropped into the Delivery and Support Unit which is also in Bocam Park, Pencoed near the Informing Healthcare offices. He was shown the National Focus on Pathways Programme for Ophthalmology to see how national pathways are being developed and converted to the Map.

This was then followed by meeting the Pathways team at Abertawe Bromorgannwg University Health Board to discuss the implementation of the Male Lower Urinary Tract Symptom (LUTS) pathway.
